Project Overview

Educational technology is moving at a very fast pace and Northwestern is preparing for new capabilities.

In October 2012, the Northwestern’s Education Technology Advisory Committee (ETAC) identified the critical need for a comprehensive review of the educational technology commitments currently in place for Northwestern’s teaching and learning environments. Deliberations by ETAC spotlighted the urgency of providing improved educational technology tools to support the faculty community’s growing efforts in blended learning, “flipping the classroom,” and online education.

In January 2013, the Learning Management Systems (LMS) Review Group, an ETAC sub-committee consisting of 25 faculty and staff, was created to investigate best options for improvements to the University’s educational technology environment. Four candidate Learning Management Systems were initially identified for further investigation and review by Northwestern: Canvas, Desire2Learn, New Blackboard, and LoudCloud.

Throughout winter and spring quarters, on-campus demonstrations and initial vendor interactions were presented to the LMS Review Group. The committee narrowed the best options for Northwestern’s next LMS down to three systems and identified the Canvas LMS as the first system for faculty to pilot in a variety of representative courses beginning fall 2013. Test “sandboxes” for Desire2Learn and New Blackboard will follow later in fall. At the conclusion of each pilot course, participating faculty and students will be required to complete a survey of their user experience with the alternative LMS.

A recommendation will be drafted by the LMS Review Group next spring, shared with the campus community at large, and presented in June 2014 to ETAC for further action. See the Learning Management System Project Timeline by ETAC.
