Job Summary

The AT Senior Systems Engineer/Administrator acts independently under general direction to install, configure and maintain operating system workstations and servers, including web servers, in support of the most complex Academic Technology processing requirements. This position acts as a team leader on less complex projects and functions as technical resource to other developers.

This position may provide after-hours support and respond to emergency situations and resolve problems.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Managing and administering various network and web-based applications;
  • Planning, designing, monitoring and administering the application of the University's principal media serving engines (Real Helix, QuickTime, Windows Media, and others as appropriate) which serve critical University efforts in instruction, distance learning, webcast and communications; 
  • Providing technical support by consulting with users to diagnose and resolve problems on multiple software or hardware platforms; 
  • Collaborating with other system engineers to effectively manage all servers maintained by Academic Technologies throughout their operational lifecycle;
  • Leading in the maintenance and administration of Academic Technologies virtual server infrastructure comprised of  VMware, Windows 2003 Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating systems;
  • Leading in the planning and the implementation of new system services, policies, procedures and security rules for Academic Technology's firewall and network;
  • Participating in the implementation of data/system security processes including access controls, monitoring software and generation of security reports;
  • Assisting in planning, implementing and maintaining the Microsoft Windows Active Directory Services infrastructure for Academic Technology's Windows 2003 Forest;
  • Assisting in backup/recovery procedures and high availability monitoring and configuration;
  • Maintaining an educated awareness of evolving information technologies through professional publications, outside contacts and ongoing professional development;
  • Based on this knowledge, researching and proposing changes to network infrastructure, operating systems, and applications to ensure continuous operations, desired performance and service;
  • Performing other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
    5-7 years of experience;
  • Significant coursework in computer systems and other technical fields;
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows 2003 server in an enterprise environment, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, TCP/IP, Apache, Tomcat and DNS;
  •  Experience in installation and management of VMware Server;
  • Experience in troubleshooting MS SQL Server performance and connectivity;
  • Experience in communication protocols especially as they relate to security and firewall implementations;
  • Demonstrated ability to learn about new information technology tools is required;
  • Communicates clearly both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with staff, faculty and students;
  • Ability to independently seek out and utilize information resources, such as books, web sites, other electronic resources, and professional colleagues to assess and solve problems;
  • Motivation and ability to solve problems thoroughly, creatively, and under time pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired;
  • 10 Years related experience;
  • Experience at research level academic setting.
