Job Summary
The Senior Systems Engineer/Administrator, Qatar is responsible for planning,
installing, configuring and maintaining server and storage systems and their
components. The function of the position is to ensure that systems operate in
accordance with established NU-Q and IT policies and procedures. Critical to
this role are the need to ensure server data integrity and to monitor and tune
operating systems to achieve optimum performance levels.
Reporting to
the Director of Information Technology for Northwestern University in Qatar,
this position is based in Doha, Qatar and will play a key role in analyzing
NU-Q's information technology environment to design and implement an appropriate
IT infrastructure.
The complexity of establishing a new IT
infrastructure for the NU-Q campus may require the Senior Systems
Engineer/Administrator to be on call 24/7 and to be available for period weekend
and/or evening maintenance and system upgrades.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the planning, design, and daily monitoring of NU-Q's servers and
operating systems (Windows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and others as
appropriate) that serve critical NU-Q efforts in instruction, and
administration;
- Analyzing system performance and resolves problems or
making appropriate recommendations to effectively manage all servers throughout
their operational lifecycle;
- Maintaining policies and standard procedures to
increase system uptime;
- Prioritizing and resolving issues, maintaining a
history of records and related documentation;
- Working with the other NU-Q
staff to provide hardware, software and networking solutions;
- Ensuring the
reliable and secure implementation of automated server environments for hardware
and operating systems and their ongoing support;
- Proactively participating
and leading meetings with customers and other NU-Q teams, and other universities
in Education City;
- Maintaining an in-depth knowledge of operating systems
and an educated awareness of evolving information technologies through
professional publications, outside contacts and ongoing professional
development;
- Based on this knowledge, researching and proposing changes to
operating systems and servers to ensure continuous operations, desired
performance, and service;
- Participating in disaster recovery planning and
exercises including backup/recovery procedures and higher availability
configurations;
- Establishing and monitoring security alerts systems, working
with other NU-Q staff, to ensure that all appropriate patches are applied in an
automated and timely fashion;
- Performing other related duties as required or
assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in an analytical field or the equivalent combination of
education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
- 3-5 years experience working with Windows and Red Hat Linux systems;
- Skills and proficiencies in organization, collaboration, negotiation,
problem solving, conflict management, customer focus, communication,
dependability, good decision-making, innovation and creativity;
- Ability to
work collaboratively within a team environment, being willing to assist in other
areas of IT as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or the equivalent combination of
education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
- Strong knowledge of operating systems;
- A minimum of five years of
progressively responsible experience in the operation system software;
- Expertise with Windows and Red Hat Linux operating systems including
- 5-7
years experience;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Demonstrated ability to develop personal and professional skills.
