Job Summary

As a member of the Northwestern University Business Intelligence team, the Sr. Cognos Business Intelligence Developer designs, develops, implements and supports various campus-wide reporting solutions. This position works closely with the data modeler and functional team to design business intelligence and reporting solutions.  These include consolidating the disparate data in different systems into a single framework model.  The incumbent also works with other reporting groups to show them the best practices for their own solutions that help end users access and analyze data in the data warehouse, data mart or operational systems.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing user requirements and, based on findings, designing specifications for technical team;
  • Assisting in troubleshooting post-production performance issues;
  • Working with various BI teams to show them the best practices for their own solutions that help end users access and analyze data in the data warehouse, data mart or operational systems;
  • Designing and implementing OLAP cubes, reports, framework models and report definitions;
  • Performing other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4-6 years of experience in Information Technology;
  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with the Cognos reporting tool suite (Report Studio, Analysis Studio, Framework Manager, Powerplay, Data Manager, Cognos SDK);
  • Expert knowledge of structured query language (Oracle SQL);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong analytic, problem solving, and collaborative skills;
  • Experience in business requirements gathering;
  • Knowledge and understanding of relational and dimensional data models;
  • Experience with ETL Tools;
  • Sound understanding of Kimball Methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in Computer Science, a related discipline, equivalent work experience or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
  • Working knowledge of Application Servers and Web servers;
  • Java EE Technologies;
  • Knowledge of XML and HTML.
