Job Summary
Under direct supervision, the Associate Network Engineer assists with the installation, and support of network communications, including LAN, MAN, WAN and Security Operations. This position evaluates current systems and researches, maintains, and develops service guidelines for cutting edge technologies. The Engineer completes assigned engineering projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines.
Specific Responsibilities
- Participating in the installation and maintenance of networking systems including but not limited to LAN/MAN/WAN, security, wireless, VoIP and video;
- Participating in the configuration of equipment and software;
- Analyzing network traffic patterns and resolves problems;
- Participating in the installation and maintenance of networked processing components including servers, workstations, and software;
- Participating in the configuration of systems and updates;
- Analyzing system performance and resolving problems or makes appropriate recommendations;
- Providing technical support to users;
- Consulting with users, diagnosing and resolving problems on multiple software or hardware programs;
- Participating in the evaluation of new software packages;
- Identifying training needs, coordinates training, and participates in the development of training materials;
- Participating in the implementation of data/system security processes including access controls, monitoring software, and generation of security reports;
- Participating in the design of networked processing and information technology systems within the University's information processing environment;
- Analyzing information system requirements and identifying and evaluating technical solutions;
- Participating in the analysis of alternatives and making recommendations;
- Assisting in the long range planning of information technology systems for the University;
- Participating in the maintenance and integrity of university data;
- Executing data back-up and recovery routines on a specified schedule or as requested;
- Maintaining awareness of evolving information technologies through professional publications, outside contacts, and ongoing professional development;
- Performing related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills and abilities may be acquired;
- CCNA certification or equivalent experience;
- Demonstrated energy and desire to achieve and ability to take action that no one has requested to improve or enhance job results and avoid problems;
- Demonstrated ability to formulate realistic plans and contingencies and establish appropriate measurements of anticipated results;
- Effectively performs duties and responsibilities with attention to detail and support for organizational policies;
- Ability to work with abstract conceptual matters;
- Willingness and ability to explore alternatives to existing products and services and identify opportunities to improve procedures and practices;
- Follows and teaches others to follow a process/method for problem solving;

Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency in one or more information technologies (routing, security, video, wireless, telephony);
- Demonstrated proficiency in multiple network operating systems and high level programming languages;
- Good working knowledge of network design and configuration, technology concepts and methodologies of analysis;
- Experienced in problem diagnosis and resolution;
- Understands interrelationships of various computer systems;
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the University community;
- Ability to use judgment in interpreting and adapting policies, precedents and work directions for appropriateness to specific tasks or problems;
- Ability to maintain composure and work effectively in a pressure setting;
- Energy and enthusiasm for this type of work, along with a clear desire to continue to develop and grow in knowledge and experience;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Good understanding of TCP/IP protocol suite;
- Some experience with switching and routing protocols including BGP, OSPF and MPLS;
- Some experience providing a secure networking environment (both wired and wireless).
