Switch from POP to IMAP (Windows Mail)

Note: This page covers changing a previously configured POP connection for Windows Mail to use IMAP. The instructions provided only cover the latest version of that particular client we support. Instructions for previous versions may be similar, but not exact.

Before you begin, you will need to Set up IMAP Access on your e-mail server.

  1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts…. A window similar to the following will appear:

  2. Select your POP account, then click Remove. A window similar to the following will appear:

  3. Click OK. A window similar to the following will appear:

  4. Click the Add… button. A window similar to the following will appear:

  5. Select the E-mail Account icon, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  6. Type your full name, nickname, or whatever you prefer into the Display Name: field, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  7. Type your e-mail address into the E-mail Address: field, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Select IMAP from the drop down menu.
    2. Type your mail server into the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: field. Your mail server is one of the following:
      • merle.it.northwestern.edu
      • lulu.it.northwestern.edu
      • casbah.it.northwestern.edu
      • hecky.it.northwestern.edu
        Note: Some departments have their own mail servers. If your mail server is not listed above, see your UNITS representative for the name of your mail server.
    3. Type your mail server into the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: field.
      Note: If if you are connecting to NUNet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than Northwestern, you need to obtain the name of your ISP's SMTP server and enter it into Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: field if you meet all of the following conditions:
      • You have an e-mail account on casbah, lulu, hecky or merle.
      • You use a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as America Online or InterAccess, or a cable modem/DSL to access the Internet.
      • You send mail to persons outside of NUNet (northwestern.edu).
  8. Click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Type your NetID into the Account Name: field.
    2. Un-check Remember password if it is checked.
  9. Click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  10. Click the Do not download my e-mail at this time checkbox, then click Finish. A window similar to the following will appear:

  11. Select your mail account, then click Properties. A window similar to the following will appear:

  12. Select the Advanced tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Un-check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox under the Outgoing mail (SMTP): field.
    2. Check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox under the Incoming mail (IMAP): field.
  13. Select the IMAP tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Check the Check for new messages in all folders checkbox.
    2. Check the Store special folders on IMAP server ckeckbox.
  14. Click OK. A window similar to the following will appear:

  15. Click Close.
