Set Up for POP (Outlook)

Note: This page covers first time user instructions for configuring their e-mail client to use POP (Post Office Protocol) for Outlook. The instructions provided only cover the latest version of that particular client we support. Instructions for previous versions may be similar, but not exact.

  1. Launch Outlook.
    1. If this is your first time running Outlook, a window similar to the following may appear:

    2. Click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

    3. Select the Yes radio button, then click Next. See below for the remaining steps.
    4. If you do not see the above screens when you launch Outlook, select Tools => E-mail Accounts…. A window similar to the following will appear:

    5. Click the New… button.
  2. Select the Microsoft Exchange Server, POP2, IMAP, or HTTP radio button, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  3. Select the Manually configure server settings checkbox, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  4. Select the Internet E-mail radio button, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Type your full name, nickname, or whatever you prefer into the Your Name: field.
    2. Type your e-mail address into the E-mail Address: field. Use your alias@northwestern.edu, e.g. b-mcgee@northwestern.edu.
    3. Select POP3 from the Account Type: drop-down menu.
    4. Type your mail server into the Incoming mail server: field. Your mail server is one of the following:
      • merle.it.northwestern.edu
      • lulu.it.northwestern.edu
      • casbah.it.northwestern.edu
      • hecky.it.northwestern.edu Note: Some departments have their own mail servers. If your mail server is not listed above, see your UNITS representative for the name of your mail server.
    5. Type your mail server into the Outgoing mail server (SMTP): field.
      Note: If if you are connecting to NUNet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than Northwestern, you need to obtain the name of your ISP's SMTP server and enter it into Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: field if you meet all of the following conditions:
      • You have an e-mail account on casbah, lulu, hecky or merle.
      • You use a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as America Online or InterAccess, or a cable modem/DSL to access the Internet.
      • You send mail to persons outside of NUNet (northwestern.edu).
    6. Type your NetID into the User Name: field.
    7. Un-check the Remember password checkbox.
  5. Click the More Settings… button. A window similar to the following will appear:

  6. Select the Advanced tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox under the Incoming Server (POP3): field.
    2. Select None from the drop-down menu under the Outgoing Server (SMTP): field.
    3. Un-check Leave a copy of messages on the server.
    4. Click OK.
  7. A window similar to the following will appear:

  8. Click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  9. Click Finish.
