- Helpful information and migration steps for Outlook/Outlook Express
Depending upon your needs, you may want to consider Outlook Express. Both are on NUIT's list of recommended e-mail clients complying with University Internet, network infrastructure and e-mail security standards.
Microsoft Outlook Express 6
Outlook Express is a free, basic e-mail program, already built into your PC computer. It is user-friendly, with the ability to receive mail from multiple e-mail accounts and create Inbox rules to help you manage and organize your e-mail. These features more than meets the needs of an average user.
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
As part of Microsoft Office, Outlook is a more advanced e-mail program that also includes task and contact management features. Outlook may be more beneficial for those who juggle scheduling, personal information (contacts, tasks), e-mail, and documents.

If I choose to use Outlook/Outlook Express, do I need to migrate my current Eudora e-mail messages?
No, you might choose to start with a clean slate by using Outlook 2003 or Outlook Express without migrating your Eudora messages and/or address book. You can still continue to open Eudora on your desktop and review old information at any time; you'll just be using Outlook 2003 or Outlook Express as your new primary e-mail client.
|
! Should you choose to migrate, please be aware of the following: | |
|---|---|
| If you plan to use Outlook 2003, migrating Eudora data requires an intermediate step of first importing into Outlook Express. | Migrating directly into Outlook (without first going through Outlook Express) from Eudora will NOT retain the original e-mail message dates. |
| Some attachments may have difficulty transferring to Outlook/Outlook Express. | Outlook does not use the same method to save attachments as Eudora, so they may not transfer; however, they will still remain in your Eudora attachments folder. Your attachments WILL NOT be lost. |
| Imported Eudora address lists may be displayed differently in Outlook/Outlook Express. | Addresses may import as Edu,jane-doe@northwestern instead of jane-doe@northwestern.edu. You will need to manually correct them. |
| Messages in Eudora Trash will import to Outlook/Outlook Express. | This is a good time to purge any messages from your trash you know you will never need again. |
Once you have chosen the e-mail client that works best for you, you're ready to continue. We have provided comprehensive step by step procedures below for both Outlook and Outlook Express to help you.
