Switch from POP to IMAP (Thunderbird-Win)
Note: This page covers changing a previously configured POP connection for Thunderbird to use IMAP. Instructions below only cover the latest version of Thunderbird we support; instructions for previous versions may be similar, but not exact.
Before you begin, you will need to Set up IMAP Access on your e-mail server.
- From the Tools menu, select Account Settings…. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Select the NU Mail account.
- Click the Remove Account Button. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Click the OK button.
- Click the Add Account… Button. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Select the Email account button.
- Click the Continue button. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Type your full name, nickname, or whatever you prefer into the Your Name: field.
- Type your e-mail address into the Email Address: field. Use your alias@northwestern.edu, e.g. b-mcgee@northwestern.edu.
- Click the Continue button. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Select the IMAP radio button.
- Type the name of your mail server - mail.it.northwestern.edu - into the Incoming Server: field. Note: Some departments have their own mail servers. If you are not on the mail.it.northwestern.edu mail server, see your UNITS representative for the name of your mail server.
- Click the Continue button. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Type your NetID into the Incoming User Name: field.
- Click the Continue button. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Type NU Mail into the Account Name: field.
- Click the Continue button. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Click Finish.
- Select Server Settings from the left-hand portion of the window. A window similar to the following will appear:

- Select the SSL radio button.
- Un-check the Use secure authentication checkbox if it is checked.
- Check the Check for new messages at startup checkbox.
- Check the Check for new messages checkbox.
- Click OK to save your changes.
