Faculty/Staff Edition Fall 2014

Collaboration Services Upgrades in Early 2015!

Northwestern Collaboration Services has begun the pilot phase for the scheduled upgrade to Microsoft Exchange 2013 and the entire University will be upgraded to the new servers in winter quarter. Outlook Web App (OWA) users can look forward to an interface more like the desktop version of Outlook, as well as more calendar and email performance improvements once the work is completed.

Faculty and staff using Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, or Outlook 2011 for Mac will not need to do anything to prepare for the upgrade. However, after Exchange 2013 is enabled, Office 2007 will no longer be fully compatible with Northwestern Collaboration Services.

Upgrade from Office 2007

Office 2007 will lack some functionality and will likely be unable to connect to the email and calendaring servers once the upgrade to Exchange 2013 is completed in the winter. Faculty and staff still using the Office 2007 of Microsoft Outlook will still be able to access their Collaboration Services account using OWA.

More good news is that Microsoft Office 2010 and 2013 are available for download (NetID required) onto University-owned machines at no additional cost! It is recommended that faculty and staff contact local technical support staff before downloading new software to their computer.

Microsoft Office for Faculty and Staff

Northwestern reached an agreement this past spring to provide Microsoft Office (AKA Office 365 ProPlus) to all active students. Beginning early next year, Office will also be available to Northwestern faculty and staff for personal use.

Faculty and staff with an active NetID will be able to download the software suite on up to five computers. This package includes the latest versions of:

Office 365 apps for tablets will also be available from the mobile vendors.

The Office 365 software license will remain active as long as the downloader is listed as an active member of the University. The Microsoft Office Home Use Program is still available, at a small fee, for faculty and staff who wish to download a copy of Office that will not expire upon leaving the University.
