Converged Communication Progress Report

Fall 2006

The Chicago campus recently took a significant step toward enabling next-generation communications services. During the month of October, NUIT successfully replaced the switched telephone network, an aging infrastructure that was no longer supported by the vendor.

Eventually, the NU Network will rely on session initiation protocol (SIP), a standard language used by many communications devices. SIP-enabling the campus infrastructure will allow for new services, greater mobility, and new ways of communicating.

Simultaneously, NUIT has engaged groups on campus to participate in pilot projects to experience new voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone sets and provide feedback about these new systems. NUIT will continue to keep the community informed as information becomes available.

Now that the Chicago phone network has been upgraded, NUIT will begin work to change out Evanston's telephone switches, expected sometime in early 2007. More information about NUIT's multi-year converged communications initiative is available on the NUIT Web site.
