Mediasite—Lecture Capture Service

Mediasite is the University’s lecture capture and management service. It is structured as a partnership model, supported by Northwestern IT, that provides lecture capture services for University schools, departments, and business units who wish to provide their users with the ability to transmit live and on-demand video streams over the Internet, or record and store them for on-demand viewing by students from a web browser. Participation requires a recurring fee for the Mediasite infrastructure.

Mediasite can be used to capture lectures and presentations for both hybrid or blended online learning and training. In addition to room-based recordings, the system supports desktop recording of audio, video, and computer slides which can also be uploaded into a sharable collection of content.

The system offers assistive technology to enhance learning for viewers of all abilities including screen readers and keyboard shortcuts, automated and searchable closed captioning, and Voice Search Service which pairs phonetic search with custom word lists for search result accuracy.

How to Participate

At the start of each fiscal year, schools, departments, and business units can opt-in to use the Mediasite system. In some cases, based on individual needs, requests are also considered mid-year. A contract that outlines individual and shared responsibilities of Northwestern IT and the partner school are reviewed and signed prior to gaining access to Mediasite.

Each partner school can provide Mediasite services to any and all of its faculty and staff. Northwestern IT provides initial training and Tier-2 support, however, each partner is responsible for providing training and Tier-1 support staff for its users.

Core Services Provided

Each campus partner receives basic set up and configuration of their Mediasite instance, a custom URL (mediasite.schoolname.northwestern.edu), for the MyMediasite user portal, 750 GB of storage, assistance and training for support staff, assistance with active directory, and account management.

Optional services include additional storage in 1 TB (Terabyte) increments and staff support to assist with daily operations.

The annual cost of Mediasite for partnering schools, departments and business units varies based on the complexity of the infrastructure and resources needed to deliver the service. A basic outline to assist in budgeting is below:
