Step 2: Guard Against Computer Bugs — Use Protective Software

Stop Malware

Think you’re safe from malicious viruses, spyware, spam, and other malware if you run antivirus software? Think again.

Malware comes in many dangerous forms—protect yourself in more ways than one. Use multiple types of security like antivirus, antispyware, a junk e-mail blocker, and a firewall.

If your computer doesn’t already have comprehensive protection, NUIT has some suggestions.

  • Use up-to-date security software

Most new computers come with some kind of security software—either a full version that simply needs to be updated regularly or a trial version that could expire after a few months. If you need security software for your computer, a full version of Northwestern's security software is free for download to students, faculty, and staff and supported by NUIT. Follow the instructions to download, install, and enable automatic updating.

Set your security program to scan your computer automatically at least once per week, or immediately if you notice a problem.

  • Stop spyware

Spyware may sound less dangerous than a computer virus, but it can cause just as much damage. Malicious spyware monitors the activity on your computer and can be used to collect your personal information or to change settings and give hackers access to your computer.

To protect against spyware, download Spybot Search & Destroy. It's free for download and recommended by NUIT.

Scan for spyware at least once per week. Spybot and most other spyware protection programs can be set to do so automatically or can run continuously in the background while you work.

  • Configure your firewall to protect your computer

A firewall prevents unauthorized connections to your computer and most machines come with one already installed. Make sure yours is configured correctly for protection and to allow you to view NUTV on campus.

    Windows Vista

      1. Right click on My Computer
      2. Select Properties
      3. Click Security Center
      4. Click Windows Firewall
      5. Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off
      6. Click Continue if prompted for permission
      7. Click On (recommended)
      8. Click OK

    Windows XP:
Note: If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, your firewall is already protecting you.

      1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel
      2. Select Network and Internet Connections
      3. Select Network Connections (if you do not see it, click Switch to Category View)
      4. Highlight a connection you want to protect, and select Change settings of this connection
      5. Select Advanced and then Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet
      6. Click OK

    Macintosh OS X:

      1. From the Apple Menu or the Dock, open System Preferences
      2. Select Sharing
      3. Select the service you want to share
      4. Firewall protection is automatically turned on for that service
      5. Select Firewall to make sure the corresponding firewall is enabled

Continue to Step 3: Stay Current
