Set Up Wireless for BlackBerry
This page provides set up instructions for connecting to the Northwestern Wireless Network using a Blackberry® mobile device. Please see the list of Blackberry® devices that support Wi-Fi® connections.
NOTE: Preliminary research shows that you may need to export the Northwestern-required CA certificate from your laptop or desktop computer and import the CA certificate to the device using the Blackberry® Desktop Manager-"Security Certificate Sync" tool.
Set Up Wireless on Blackberry®
To manually add a Wi-Fi® network, complete the following steps from your Blackberry® device:
- Click Set Up Wi-Fi (or click Manage Connections and then Setup Wi -Fi Network.
- If prompted, click Next on the Welcome to WI-FI Setup screen.
- Click Manually Add Network.
- Type the network name or Service Set Identifier (SSID) “Northwestern”.
- Click Add.
- From the Security Type menu, select the security type for the Wi-Fi network. (Northwestern SSID = PEAP).
- Specify the required security credentials. <netid> & password
- Specify the CA certificate (Verisign Class 3 Secure Server CA - G2).
- Specify Inner Link Security: EAP-MS-CHAP v2.
- Click Connect to manually add and connect to a Wi-Fi network.
- To view connections status, you can access WI-FI – DIAGNOSTICS from the WI-FI Connections menu.
If you are unable to establish a connection to the Northwestern Wireless Network and you have correctly entered your NetID and NetID password, and the CA certificate selected is VeriSign Class 3 Secure Server CA-G2, you may need to export the Northwestern-required CA certificate from your laptop or desktop computer and import the CA certificate to the device using the Blackberry® Desktop Manager-"Security Certificate Sync" tool.
Importing CA Certificate in to a Blackberry®
- Download the VeriSign Class 3 Secure Server CA-G2 security certificate.
- Open Blackberry® Desktop Manager.
- Click Synchronize Certificates.

- Click import button.

- Find and select certificate downloaded in Step 1.

- On the Intermediate Certificates tab, check the box for the VeriSign Class 3 Secure Server CA - G2 security certificate.

- After the certificate has been imported in to the Desktop Manager, click the Synchronize button to import the certificate onto your Blackberry® device.
