NUIT provides recommendations for purchasing laptops, desktop computers, mobile devices, and other hardware. Please review the guidelines before making a purchase to ensure compatibility with Northwestern technology. Note: Networking equipment that extends the NU Network is not permitted in the residence halls, or any other part of the NU Network. This includes routers, hubs, switches, and wireless access points. Hardware for personal use
- NUIT believes the recommended configurations will last approximately 30-36 months.
- Middle- to higher-end technology is recommended in anticipation of the use of resource-intensive applications, especially in residence halls. In addition, high-end technology may still useful be by the time a student graduates.
Hardware for University business
- NUIT believes the recommended configurations will last approximately 30-36 months. After this time, aging computers should be replaced.
- NUIT encourages buyers to purchase within the guidelines to ensure that products will have a reasonable life span.
- The guidelines also streamline purchasing and reduce the variety of systems that need technical support.
