PDA Software

PDAs generally come pre-installed with several software packages and may come with a CD containing additional software. Before you buy a PDA, be sure to verify whether it comes with the types of software you will want to use, or the software is available to be purchased separately. Additionally, PDA versions of software are usually not full-featured.

E-mail

Both Palm OS and Pocket PC's allow you to access your NU e-mail via POP3, provided you've established a network connection in some manner. Keep in mind that if you switch between checking your e-mail via your PDA, NU's WebMail gateway, and an e-mail client such as Outlook or Eudora, you may encounter a situation where you have multiple instances of particular messages.

Native Windows/Macintosh support

While most Palm OS devices have native Windows and Macintosh support, Pocket PC devices currently only have native Windows support. There are third-party applications which allow for synching between Pocket PC devices and Macs, but NUIT testing has shown they are unstable and unreliable at this time and are not recommended.

Additional Software and Services

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader: Allows you to view PDF files on your PDA and is available for Palm OS and Pocket PC devices.
  • Palm.net wireless service: Offered by Palm and available on certain Palm OS PDAs such as the Palm i705. Allows for wireless connectivity in over 260 metropolitan areas and gives you access to e-mail, Web browsing and Instant Messenger from your PDA anywhere service is available. NUIT was able to receive service on both the Evanston and Chicago campuses. The service can conveniently be configured to be "always on," but keep in mind that this significantly decreases battery life. Palm.net wireless service is available for a monthly charge.
