NetID Password Reset Guidelines

Northwestern Information Technology (IT) must be confident that the person requesting a password reset is the NetID owner or a responsible University administrator who can verify the identity and status of the NetID owner. Use the following guidelines to reset a forgotten or expired NetID password:

Reset Your Forgotten NetID Password Online

If you previously established answers to security questions, you may reset your forgotten password by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to the NU Validate log in page.
  2. Enter your NetID and leave the Password field blank.
  3. Click the Forgot Your Password? button.
  4. Answer at least two of your security questions.
  5. Follow password change prompts and click Change Password.

If you have forgotten your password and cannot answer your security questions, you must choose one of the options below to reset your NetID password.

Visit the Northwestern IT Support Center or Northwestern IT NetID Support Kiosk

In Evanston: Bring your WildCARD or other photo identification to the Northwestern IT Support Center to receive an activation code to log in to NU Validate and update your NetID password.

In Chicago: Bring your WildCARD or other photo identification to the Northwestern IT NetID Support Kiosk located in the University Services Parking/WildCARD Office to receive an activation code to log in to NU Validate and update your NetID password.

Contact Your School or Departmental Administrator

Some schools and large departments have designated NetID administrators who are able to reset NetID activation codes for persons within that school or department. You may seek that person out rather than going to the Northwestern IT Support Center. Please contact your department or dean's office to see if this option is available to you.

Contact an Intermediary

For students, faculty, and staff who are away from campus or cannot visit the Northwestern IT Support Center, Northwestern IT will accept an e-mail request from contact who is either a department chair, director, or dean's office staff member and familiar with the status of the faculty, staff, or student to provide a NetID reset activation code. The activation code is communicated to the intermediary who then passes it on to the faculty, staff, or student.

Send a Notarized Request

For faculty, staff, and students who are away from campus and do not have an intermediary, Northwestern IT will accept notarized requests to provide an activation code to enable a NetID password reset. The request must include a photocopy of two forms of photo identification (i.e., WildCARD and driver's license). The letter should be scanned and sent via e-mail with attachments to consultant@northwestern.edu.
