The days of being restricted to a desk or computer lab
for Internet access are long gone. With options such as laptops
with wireless cards, mobile phones, and new multi-functional "smartphones,"
faculty and staff can take advantage of Northwestern's full range
of online services from almost any location on either campus.
Wireless Networking
Northwestern has more than 200 access points around campus for
you to connect to the Internet for FREE. For your convenience, NUIT
Wireless signs indicate authorized "hot spots" at the
University. Find comprehensive information about wireless access,
including a list of campus access locations, at NUIT's Wireless
Access Web site.
Mobile Phone Service
Mobile phones are convenient and more affordable than ever, but
choosing a phone and service plan can seem overwhelming. Start your
search on the NUIT Mobile
Phone Service Web site for details about service providers,
calling plans, phone features, and manufacturers. Note:
NUIT has ended the centralized University billing agreement
with Cingular Wireless (Cingular) in order to ensure that each department/individual
has full access to the many service provider choices.
Combined with mobile phone service, new advancements in "smartphones"
offer you two-in-one functionality (Personal Digital Assistant and
mobile phone use), along with the flexibility of staying connected
while conducting University business. With a smartphone, you can
access your e-mail, instant messenger, or even the Internet through
your service provider and/or through FREE wireless "hot spots"
around campus. Find more details on the NUIT Smartphones
Web site.
Connecting Off Campus
Along with the modem pool going away in August, 2005, there are
even more reasons to join iPassConnect. Offered by NUIT, iPassConnect
is a commercial international Internet service that is available
on a monthly for-fee basis to faculty and staff who need Internet
access for business purposes while traveling or otherwise off-campus.
Around the world, iPassConnect has more than 15,000 analog (phone)
connections, 11,000 Wi-Fi access points, and 1,591 Broadband high-speed
connections. In addition, iPassConnect is available in more than
134 airports, including Chicago O'Hare. For more information, please
visit NUIT's iPassConnect
Web site. Additional information is also available about the
planned
phase out of Northwestern's central modem pools set for August,
2005.
Being productive while on the go has never been easier at Northwestern. |
