Choices for connecting from off-campus
Whether your work takes you halfway around the world or only a few miles from campus, you can get reliable, fast access to the Internet and the NU Network almost anywhere.
- If you travel frequently on business, you have a choice of over 19,000 Internet access points in 160 countries with iPassConnect, a national and international Internet service available on a monthly for-fee basis. In addition to dial-up service, iPassConnect supports wired Internet access from hotel rooms, airports, and other locations.
- As an alternative Internet access option for travelers, your Internet Service Provider may offer national "roaming" capabilities or low-cost dial-up service that let you connect with a local phone call and avoid long-distance access charges.
- Is most of your off-campus connecting done from the comfort of home? A variety of high-speed DSL and cable modem service offerings are available. These connections are fast, especially if you need to stay connected for long periods of time or download large files.
- Wireless "hotspots" with reasonably-priced Internet access are becoming easier and easier to find at coffee shops, bookstores, and many other locations off-campus. If you'll be traveling somewhere unfamiliar, call your hotel ahead of time to learn what's available.
Whenever you connect to the NU Network from off-campus, be sure to use VPN (Virtual Private Network) software. VPN protects against anyone trying to get unauthorized access to data you're sending or receiving, and is necessary for access to many networked University resources including electronic Library resources and the NU Software Center.
