Resources for Travel

Stay connected to Northwestern while traveling on University-related business with these tips and resources:

Situation Considerations and Options
Connect via your University laptop
  • Expect to use Virtual Private Network (VPN) for full access to NU Network resources.
  • Use dynamic IP addressing (DHCP) for easier connections to other networks; check with your local support staff for configuration.
  • Test your set up before you leave, especially if you don't normally use modem or wireless access.
  • Ensure that you can reset your NetID password remotely; contact the NUIT Support Center at 847-491-HELP (4357) or consultant@northwestern.edu.
Connect via local resources
  • Plan to use WebMail to access your e-mail from any computer online.
  • Network connections or wireless access is often available from other Universities, research centers, hotels, cafes, and conference centers.
Connect via dial-up or DSL
  • Check if your dial-up or DSL service has a national network of local access dial-up numbers to connect with a local phone call while traveling.
Connect via cable modem
  • The nature of cable modem service does not enable nationwide dial-up numbers.
  • Consider signing up for an inexpensive dial-up service.
Connect via cell phone
  • If you intend to use this as your primary Internet connection, check if your serivce plan allows for unlimited data connections or charges a minute-by-minute fee.
  • Some phones can be used as wireless modems, as long as you have dial-up access from an Internet service provider. Check with your service provider for more information and proper equipment to attach the phone to your computer.
