Set Up VPN for Macintosh

Follow the steps below to set up a VPN connection:

Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

  1. Select Applications => Internet Connect.

  2. Select File => New VPN Connection window.

    Note: If this is the first time you have created a new VPN connection, a window similar to the following will appear:

  3. Select PPTP, then click Continue. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Type vpn-public.vpn.northwestern.edu into the Server address: field.
    2. Type your NetID into the Account Name: field.
    3. Type your NetID password into the Password: field.
  4. Click Connect. A window similar to the following will appear:

Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

  1. Open System Preferences by going to Apple>System Preferences.

  2. Select the Network icon in the System Preferences window.

  3. Select the + button at the bottom left of the screen to add a new connection.

  4. Select the following:
    a. Interface: VPN
    b. VPN Type: PPTP
    c. Service Name: NUVPN
    d. Select Create.

  5. Click the arrows to the right Configuration and select Add Configuration from the drop down menu.

  6. Enter NUVPN in the Name field and select Create.

  7. From Network window enter the following information:
    a. Server Address: vpn-public.vpn.northwestern.edu.
    b. Account Name: enter your NetID
    c. (Optional) Check the Show VPN status menu bar box if you would like to start the VPN connection from your menu bar, otherwise you will need to open System Preferences.

  8. Click the Advanced button.

  9. Select Options. Verify Send all traffic over VPN connection is checked .

  11. Click the Apply button.

  12. Click the Connect button.
