Set Up VPN for Windows

Follow the steps below to add and configure a VPN networking entry:

Add a VPN Networking Entry Windows XP

  1. On your desktop, right-click My Network Places, then select Properties.

    Note: If you are running Windows XP and do not see My Network Places on your desktop, you need to make the icon visible. See Making My Network Places appear on your Desktop for instructions.

  2. Double-click Make New Connection. A window similar to the following will appear:

  3. Click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  4. Select the Connect to the network at my workplace radio button, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  5. Select the Virtual Private Network connection radio button, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  6. Type NUVPN into the Company Name field, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  7. Type vpn-public.vpn.northwestern.edu into the Host name or IP address (for example, microsoft.com or 157.54.0.1): field, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  8. Select the Anyone's use radio button, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  9. Click Finish.

Configure a VPN Networking Entry for Windows XP

  1. Right-click on NU VPN on the Network Connections page, then select Properties from the Contextual menu.
  2. Select the Options tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Check the Display progress while connecting checkbox.
    2. Check the Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc. checkbox.
    3. Un-check the Include Windows logon domain checkbox if it is checked.

  3. Select the Networking tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Select L2TP IPSec VPN from the Type of VPN: drop-down menu.
    2. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

  4. Click Properties. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Select the Obtain an IP address automatically radio button.
    2. Select the Obtain DNS server address automatically radio button.
    3. Click OK to close Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.

  5. Select the Security tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Select the Typical (recommended settings) radio button.
    2. Check the Require data encryption (disconnect if none) check box. IPSec settings
    3. Select the IPSec Settings button. 
    4. Check the box for "Use pre-shared key for authentication" and enter "nuit" for the key.

  6. Select the Advanced tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

  7. Click Settings…. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Select the On (recommended) radio button.
    2. Click OK to close the Windows Firewall window.

  8. A window similar to the following will appear:

  9. Click OK to save your NU VPN Properties changes.

Add a VPN Networking Entry for Windows Vista

  1. Open the Network and Sharing Center by clicking Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.

  2. Select the Set up a connection or network option from the left-hand side.

  3. Select Connect to a workplace and click Next.

  4. Select Use my internet connection (VPN).

  5. Enter vpn-public.vpn.northwestern.edu in the Internet address field and NUVPN in the Destination name field. Click Next.

  6. Enter your NetID in the User name field. Leave the Password field blank. Click Create.

  7. The Network is ready to use confirmation window will appear. Click Close.

Configure a VPN Networking Entry for Windows Vista

  1. Open Network Connections. Right click on NUVPN and select Properties.

  2.  From the NUVPN Properties window, select the Options tab. Under Dialing options, do not select Include Windows logon domain.

  3. Select the Security tab. Select Typical secuirty option. Set Verify my identity as follows: to Require secured password. Do not select: Automatically use my Windows logon name and password.

  4. Select the Networking tab. Set Type of VPN to PPTP VPN. Click OK.

Add a VPN Networking Entry for Windows 7

  1. Open the Network and Sharing Center by clicking Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.

  2. Select the Set up a new connection or network.

  3. Select Connect to a workplace and click Next.

  4. Select Use my internet connection (VPN).

  5. Enter vpn-public.vpn.northwestern.edu in the Internet address field and NUVPN in the Destination name field. Click Next.

Configure a VPN Networking Entry for Windows 7

  1. In your Network Tray click your Network Connections. Right click on NUVPN and select Properties.

  2.  From the NUVPN Properties window, select the Options tab. Under Dialing options, do not select Include Windows logon domain.

  3. Select the Security tab. Set Type of VPN to PPTP VPN. Click OK.
