Set Up VPN for PDA/Handheld

Using a PDA to connect to Northwestern's VPN network requires:

Wireless capability — A PDA with an 802.11b-compatible wireless card or built-in capability, and a Web browser capable of making a secure, SSL-protected connection. Bluetooth will not work with Northwestern's wireless network.

VPN — VPN software or settings enabled; three VPN options for PDA/handheld devices have been tested with Northwestern's wireless network:

  1. Native VPN (PocketPC only) — Use the built-in VPN client, and see setting up VPN for PocketPC for instructions.
  2. MovianVPN — Order MovianVPN as an alternative method for VPN. This is not recommended, as the vendor has discontinued support of this product. Order an individual license for $69 with a purchase order or credit card from Onixnet at 1-800-664-9638 or e-mail keith@onixnet.com.
  3. Mergic VPN (Palm OS only) — If your Palm OS device did not come pre-installed with Mergic VPN, visit the Mergic Web site for system requirements, purchasing, and download instructions.

Visit NUIT's smart phone Web page for information on PDA devices with cell phone functionality.
