Make an Ethernet Connection

Access the Northwestern Network with an Ethernet connection from on-campus offices, classrooms, residence halls, and other locations. Configure your computer's network settings to use addressing for either Dynamic Ethernet (DHCP) or Static Ethernet.

Dynamic Ethernet

This is the most common protocol to use to access the Internet from Ethernet jacks in residence halls, wired Greek houses, offices, and public spaces. Unless you have been instructed otherwise by your local tech support personnel, you should configure your computer to use DHCP.

Static Ethernet

Some departments require some or all computers on their local subnet to have static IP addresses. Static Ethernet may also be required if you are accessing from certain office or lab locations. Check with your local tech support personnel to see if you have been assigned a static IP address before configuring your computer.

If you are unsure of your connection type, please contact your local technical support person or the Northwestern IT Support Center at 847-491-4357 (1-HELP) or consultant@northwestern.edu.
