Set Up Static Ethernet for Windows

Use this configuration if you are in an office or lab and use a static IP address. Most offices use dynamic IP addresses. Please check with your technical support representative for the correct IP address settings and options.

  1. On your desktop, right-click My Network Places, then select Properties.

    Note: If you are running Windows XP and do not see My Network Places on your desktop, you need to make the icon visible. See Making My Network Places appear on your Desktop for instructions.

  2. Right-click Local Area Connection, then select Properties. A window similar to the following will appear:

  3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Click the Use the following IP address: radio button.
    2. Type the IP address supplied to you in the IP Address: field.
    3. Type 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet mask: field.
    4. Click the Use the following DNS server addresses: radio button.
    5. Type 129.105.49.1 in the Preferred DNS server: field.
    6. Type 165.124.49.21 in the Alternate DNS server: field.
  4. Click the Advanced... button.
  5. Click the DNS tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Click the Append these DNS suffixes (in order): radio button.
    2. Click the Add... button that is below the the Append these DNS suffixes (in order): radio button. A window similar to the following will appear:

    3. Type it.northwestern.edu into the Domain suffix field, then click the Add button.
    4. Click the Add... button that is below the the Append these DNS suffixes (in order): radio button. A window similar to the following will appear:

    5. Type northwestern.edu into the Domain suffix field, then click the Add button.
  6. Click OK to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.
  7. Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  8. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties window.
