Set Up Wireless for Mac

Some laptops either do not support WPA2, require that you update the drivers for your wireless card, or require an add-on card or adapter. Contact your vendor to determine your computer's wireless compatibility with 802.1X/WPA2.

Configure wireless for Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

1. Configure TCP/IP
2. Authenticate to the Network

Configure Wireless for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Connect to Northwestern Wireless Network


Configure TCP/IP

  1. Select Apple => System Preferences.
  2. Click Network. A window similar to the following will appear:

  3. Select New Location… from the Location: drop-down menu. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Type NU AirPort into the Name your new location: field.
    2. Click OK.
    3. Select NU AirPort from the Location: drop-down menu.
  4. Select AirPort from the Show: drop-down menu. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Select the TCP/IP Tab.
    2. Select Using DHCP from the Configure IPv4: drop-down menu.
    3. Click Apply Now.
  5. Select System Preferences => Quit System Preferences.

Authenticate to the Network

  1. Select Applications => Internet Connect.

  2. Select File => New 802.1X Connection…. A window similar to the following will appear:

  3. Select Edit Configurations… from the Configuration: drop-down menu. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. Type NUWPA into the Description: field.
    2. Select AirPort from the Network Port: drop-down menu.
    3. Type your NetID into the User Name: field.
    4. Type your NetID password into the Password: field.
    5. Select Northwestern from the Wireless Network: drop-down menu.
    6. Check the PEAP protocol from the Authentication: field.
    7. Un-Check TTLS, TLS, LEAP, and MD5 protocols from the Authentication: field if they are checked.
    8. Click OK to save your changes.
  4. A window similar to the following will appear:

  5. Click the Connect Button. A window similar to the following will appear:

    1. You need to verify that the certificate is valid before you continue. Click the Show Certificate button to show the details of the certificate. A window similar to the following will appear:

    2. If the Issued by: and Expires: match the above screen, click the Always trust these certificates checkbox.
    3. Click the Continue Button.
  6. If you are successful, a window similar to the following will appear:

Connect to Northwestern wireless network

  1. Open System Preferences by going to Apple>System Preferences.

  2. Open Network Preferences by clicking on the Network icon.

  3. Select AirPort from the left side of the window. Make sure that AirPort is turned on. Click the Advanced button.

  4. Select the 802.1X tab. Click the arrows to the right of Domain. Select User from the drop down menu. (Note: there are two possible screen views below in Leopard)

  5. To add a new 802.1X configuration:
    a. Click the + button at the bottom left of the window.
    b. Enter Northwestern as the name of the configuration.
    c. Enter the your NetID in the User Name field.
    d. Leave the Password field blank.
    e. Enter Northwestern into the Wireless Network field.
    d. Un-check all options in the Authentication list, except PEAP.

  6. Select the AirPort tab. If you are prompted to save the 802.1X profile, do so.

  7. Click the + button at the bottom left of the Preferred Networks list.

  8. Enter the following information:
    a. Network Name: Northwestern
    b. Security: WPA2 Enterprise
    c. User Name: enter your NetID
    d. Password: leave blank
    e: 802.1X : Northwestern
    f : Check Remember this network

  9. Click the Add button.

  10. Northwestern will appear in Preferred Networks list. Click the OK
    button.

  11. Select Continue to approve the certificate and connect to the network.

  12. Enter your NetID password. If you see the following screen, then the network has successfully connected.
