Set Up Wireless for Windows XP
Some laptops either do not support WPA2, require that you update the drivers for your wireless card, or require an add-on card or adapter. Contact your vendor to determine your computer's wireless compatibility with 802.1X/WPA2.
Windows XP Wireless Set Up

On your desktop, right-click My Network Places, then select Properties.
Note: If you are running Windows XP and do not see My Network Places on your desktop, you need to make the icon visible. See Making My Network Places appear on your Desktop for instructions.

Right-click Wireless Network Connection, then select Properties. A window similar to the following will appear:

Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click the Properties button. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Click the Obtain an IP address automatically radio button.

Click the Obtain DNS server address automatically radio button.

Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.

Select the Wireless Networks tab. A window similar to the following will appear:

Click the Add… button. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Type Northwestern into the Network name (SSID): field.

Select WPA2 from the Network Authentication: drop-down menu.
Note: If you do not see WPA2 as a choice, you need to install the Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)/Wireless Provisioning Services Information Element (WPS IE) Update from Microsoft. Please see http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893357 for information on installing the update.

Select AES from the Data encryption: drop-down menu.

Select the Authentication tab. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Select Protected EAP (PEAP) from the EAP type: drop-down menu.
- Un-Check the Authenticate as computer when computer information is available checkbox if it is checked.

Un-Check the Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable checkbox if it is checked.

Click the Properties button. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Check the Validate server certificate checkbox.

Select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) from the Select Authentication Method: drop-down menu.

Click the Configure… button. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Un-check the Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). checkbox if it is checked.

Click OK to save your changes.

Click OK to close the Protected EAP Properties window. A window similar to the following will appear:

Click OK to close the Northwestern Properties window. A window similar to the following will appear:

Click OK to save your changes.

Right-click Wireless Network Connection, then select View Available Wireless Networks. A window similar to the following will appear:

To connect to the Northwestern wireless network, highlight Northwestern, then click the Connect button.
Note: If this is the first time that you connect, a notice similar to the following will appear in your system tray:

Click on the icon in the system tray. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Type your NetID into the User name: field.
- Type your NetID password into the Password: field.
- Leave the Logon domain: field blank.

Click OK.

You need to verify that the certificate is valid before you continue. Click the View Server Certificate button to show the details of the certificate. A window similar to the following will appear:

If the Issued by: and Valid from match the above screen, click OK. A window similar to the following will appear:

Click OK to save your changes.
