E-mail Defense System (EDS)
EDS is NUIT's system for filtering junk e-mail, phishing attempts, viruses, and malicious high-risk attachments sent to the University community. EDS scans all incoming mail, deletes identifiable viruses and junk e-mail, and quarantines other junk e-mail before delivering messages to the University's central e-mail servers (casbah, hecky, lulu, and merle).
A safer, more manageable inbox
Contaminated e-mail attachments are the most common source of computer infections. With EDS filtering out most of these as well as junk e-mail, Northwestern e-mail recipients experience:
- an increase in computer security,
- a decrease in the amount of incoming junk e-mail, allowing for easier e-mail management.

Privacy
It is important to note that EDS is an automated process and does not monitor or read private e-mail messages.
Opt-out
A user's e-mail is automatically scanned by EDS, unless he or she chooses to opt-out of junk e-mail filtering. While it is not recommended, users may opt-out at any time by editing their NetID online directory information.
