E-mail Defense System Quarantine

Before each e-mail message arrives at one of the central servers (casbah, hecky, lulu, and merle), the E-mail Defense System scans the message to determine if it meets the criteria to be quarantined. If the junk e-mail meets the quarantine criteria, the System will take action depending upon which group the user is in and moves the message to a quarantine area instead of delivering it to the intended inbox.

User Group EDS Probability Rating to Quarantine Messages EDS Probability Rating to Delete Messages

Will messages be deleted once they are quarantined?

EDS holds each quarantined message for seven days by default before deleting it, allowing you the option of viewing it before it is deleted. This is a customizable feature and can be extended temporarily for reasons such as leaves of absence, but is not recommended on a regular basis.

Virus-infected e-mail messages

All e-mail messages determined to contain mass mailer viruses or malicious attachments are deleted immediately.

Notification of quarantined messages

EDS sends a personal digest to you daily summarizing your quarantined e-mails. Users who do not plan to check these digests daily can turn this feature off/on. To do so, use the Options menu on the EDS site and uncheck (or check) the box reading "E-mail me the EDS Quarantine Digest, a daily notification of junk e-mail blocked by EDS."

Viewing Quarantine Digests

The E-mail Defense System delivers a daily digest via e-mail, listing all e-mail that has been quarantined since your last digest. It includes the quarantined message's ID number, the junk e-mail probability rating, the message's "From" address, and the message's subject.

Retrieving messages from quarantine

To retrieve a single message from quarantine, access the E-mail Defense System and log in using your NetID and password. Use the Deliver Message link to release the message and deliver it to your mailbox. (Note: WebMail users will need to log into the E-mail Defense System if they want to release any quarantined messages.)

Why am I not receiving my daily quarantine digest?

Some e-mail clients have built-in message filtering that can be enabled by the end user. These filters can result in quarantine digests being filtered by the end user's e-mail client. If your e-mail client filters your mail, make sure you have it configured not to filter your EDS digest, as that message would score highly as junk e-mail for most filters.

What if I don't want to receive a daily quarantine digest?

You can opt out (or opt back in) of receiving digests without affecting how your mail is filtered. Users who do not plan to check these digests daily can turn this feature off/on. To do so, use the Options menu on the EDS site and uncheck (or check) the box reading "E-mail me the EDS Quarantine Digest, a daily notification of junk e-mail blocked by EDS." The EDS does not allow you to change the frequency with which you are sent digests; this is set on a system-wide level. Currently, you can only opt in or opt out.
