Tips to Reduce Junk E-mail in Eudora

NUIT strongly encourages Northwestern users to upgrade to the latest version of Eudora to help fight unwanted e-mails.

The tips below are intended for Eudora 6.1. For more information on downloading Eudora, please visit the Eudora Web site.

Tips and Tools for Eudora for Windows

1) To increase security:

Open Eudora and go to Tools > Options >

  • Under Getting Started, "Allow authentication" should be checked.
  • Under Checking Mail, "Save password" should not be checked.
  • Under Incoming Mail, "Authentication style: Passwords"  should be checked.
  • Under Display, "Automatically download HTML graphics" should not be checked.
  • Under Viewing Mail, "Use Microsoft's viewer" and "Allow executables in HTML content" should not be checked.
  • Under Extra Warnings, "Launch a program externally" should be checked.
  • Under MAPI, "Warn on MAPI auto-send of messages" should be checked.

2) To set junk e-mail filters:

Eudora 6.1 has automatic filtering capabilities. For information on this feature, please visit the Eudora Web site.

You can also create filters in Eudora that will automatically sort incoming or outgoing messages into different mailboxes of your choice. Filters can be used in a number of ways, but they are an especially helpful method of removing unsolicited junk e-mail from your In box. Here's how to create a simple filter that will automatically transfer an incoming message into the Trash for easy deletion.

  1. From any Eudora mailbox, select or open the email message with the information you want to use to create the filter (e.g. sender's address).
  2. Select Special > Make Filter to open the Make Filter dialog box.
  3. Check the Match Conditions fields to be sure the information is as you want it, and edit if necessary
    • If you are filtering incoming messages, be sure the Incoming box under Match is checked
    • If you want the filter to sort all messages from a specific sender, select the From contains radio button. (By default, the sender's email address should be displayed.)
  4. Under Action, select Transfer to existing mailbox, then click the button to the right. A drop-down menu will appear next to the button.
  5. Select the Eudora mailboxes you wish to transfer the message to from the drop-down menu. (For this example, select Trash.)
  6. Click Create Filter.

From now on, any incoming messages from the sender you specified will automatically be sorted into the Trash mailbox. For further information on creating and using filters, consult the Eudora Help files or user manual, or visit the Eudora Web site.
