EndNote enables easy organization of bibliographic references and images, and creates bibliographies and figure lists instantly. EndNote comes with the NU Toolkit, including customized connections that work with Northwestern's library databases. Details about the NU Toolkit can be found on the University Library Web site.

Availability

• Installation is available for Windows (Win 7, Vista, and XP) and Mac.
• Licenses are available for current Northwestern faculty, staff, and students for personal or professional use, and can be installed on personal or departmental machines.
• EndNote X5 for Mac is compatible with PPC and Intel-based Macs.
• If during installation of Endote X5 on a Windows computer you are asked for a product key, please quit the installation, extract all files from the downloaded .zip file, and run the installer.

Download and Install

EndNote X5 for Windows

1. Download EndNote X5 for Windows.
2. Locate the downloaded "EndNoteX5Win.zip" file and right-click on it to extract the folder contained within it. Do not simply double-click the zip file.
3. Open the "EndNoteX5Win" folder; double-click "ENX5Inst.msi" and follow the installation directions.
4. After installing EndNote X5, copy the files from EndNoteX5Win\NU_Toolkit\Connections folder to the appropriate folder on your computer. A common location for this folder is C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Connections\.

EndNote X5 for Mac

1. Download EndNote X5 for Mac.
2. Locate the downloaded "EndNoteX4Mac.zip" file and double-click it to extract the folder contained within it.
3. Open the "EndNoteX5Mac" folder; double-click "EndNote X5 Site Installer.dmg" and follow the installation directions.
4. After installing EndNote X5, move the files from Connections folder contained in NU_Tookit folder in the "EndNoteX5Mac" folder to your Applications -> EndNote X5 -> Connections folder.

Important Information for Hospital-based Affiliates

Your hospital's (e.g., CMH, NMH) firewall may prevent you from downloading this software while connected to their network. You can easily download EndNote by using a wireless or wired connection on the NU campus (e.g., Galter Library). You can also download EndNote at home using a VPN connection. Please contact your hospital's help desk if you must download the software to a computer on your hospital's network.
