General Questions
What are the minimum requirements for running Symantec/Norton AntiVirus?
The minimum requirements for Symantec AntiVirus for Windows are:
- 32 MB RAM minimum
- 45 MB disk space for the Symantec AntiVirus install directory, and approximately 40 MB free on the System drive (usually drive C)
- Intel Pentium processor (Pentium II or higher recommended)
The minimum requirements for Symantec Norton AntiVirus for Mac OS X are:
- G3 or G4 processor
- 128 MB RAM
- 10 MB available disk space for installation
The minimum requirements for Symantec Norton AntiVirus for Mac OS 8.1 - 9.x are:
- PowerPC processor
- 24 MB RAM
- 10 MB available disk space for installation
What happens if I do not uninstall my previous antivirus software?
McAfee, Virex, and previous versions of Norton (including Norton AntiVirus 2002) are not compatible with Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition. If you do not remove them, you run the risk of your system not functioning properly.
Can I do other work on my computer while AntiVirus is installing?
No. It is recommended that you close all programs (particularly your e-mail client) when installing AntiVirus.
Macintosh-Specific Questions
Can I use Virex instead?
Northwestern's license with Network Associates (the makers of Virex) expired in June 2002.
Does Symantec Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh work with Mac OS 9.x and below?
No. The current version of Symantec Norton AntiVirus that we distribute does not work with Mac OS 9.x and below. Please see NUIT support for MacOS 9.x and below has been discontinued for more information.
Windows-Specific Questions
How do I use LiveUpdate from off campus?
If you are experiencing difficulty using LiveUpdate from off campus on a Windows computer, your Symantec AntiVirus may be configured for on-campus updates. This is especially likely if you originally installed Symantec AntiVirus while living or working on campus. You may either:
- Authenticate to the NU Network using VPN (Virtual Private Networking) and run LiveUpdate manually.
- Download and run NUIT's LiveUpdate Switching Utility, which will configure Symantec AntiVirus to use a different LiveUpdate server.
Can I use SystemWorks in conjunction with AntiVirus Corporate Edition?
To use AntiVirus Corporate Edition in conjunction with any version of SystemWorks, you must uninstall the AntiVirus component of SystemWorks before installing AntiVirus Corporate Edition.
Will LiveUpdate run when I am offline?
Note: LiveUpdate will not display a message indicating that a scheduled update has been missed. Therefore, it is recommended that you schedule your LiveUpdates for times when you are connected.
LiveUpdate will run automatically the next time you are connected as long as you connect within the Handle missed events within time frame. By default it is set to handle missed events within eight hours. You can modify this setting by:
- Launching AntiVirus Corporate Edition.
- Select File=> Schedule update….
- Click the Schedule button.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Type the number of hours you need into the Handle missed events within: field.
I have a file that is quarantined. What does that mean?
Sometimes Symantec Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition detects an unknown virus that can not be eliminated with the current set of virus definitions. Quarantine safely isolates virus-infected files on your computer. A virus in a Quarantined item cannot spread. The default options for Real time Protection and all scan types are to clean a virus from an infected file on detection, but to place the file in Quarantine if it cannot be cleaned.
Note: If a file is placed in Quarantine, update your virus definitions. After updating the definitions, all files in Quarantine are scanned automatically.
Can I use McAfee instead?
