Configuring Symantec Auto-Protect for Windows

Step-by-step instructions on how to configure Auto-Protect using Symantec Endpoint Protection for Windows.

Note: Auto-Protect is enabled by default. If you turn off any of the options you run the risk of being infected. To check to see if file protection is turned on:

  1. Select Start => Programs => Symantec Endpoint Protection => Symantec Endpoint Protection. A window similar to the following will appear:

  2. Select Change Settings=> Configure Settings next to Antivirus and Antispyware Protection. A window similar to the following will appear:

    Note: File System Auto-Protect is a type of ongoing or background scan. Whenever you access, copy, save, move, open, or close a file, Symantec Endpoint Protection's File System Auto-Protect scans the file to ensure that a the file is not infected. It is important that you keep this enabled at all times, particularly if you are using Eudora.

    1. Make sure the Enable Auto-Protect (Enabled) checkbox is checked.
    2. Click OK.
  3. Select Configure => Internet E-Mail Auto-Protect. A window similar to the following will appear:

    Note: Internet E-Mail Auto-Protect is a type of ongoing or background scan. This scan will check incomming as well as outgoing email. If you use an email client other than Outlook and/or Outlook Express, you need to have this enabled.

    1. Make sure the Enable Internet E-Mail Auto-Protect checkbox is checked.
    2. Click the Advanced… button. A window similar to the following will appear:

      Note: If your email client is configured to use SSL (Server Socket Layer), you will need to change the Incoming server (POP3): field.

      1. Type 995 into the Incoming server (POP3): field.
      2. Click OK to close the window and save your changes.
      3. Click OK.
  4. Select Change Settings => Client Management Settings =>Tamper Protection. A window similar to the following will appear:

    Note: Tamper Protection protects Symantec applications from tampering by worms, Trojan horses, viruses, and security risks.

    1. Make sure the Enable Tamper Protection checkbox is checked.
    2. Click OK.
