Using Your iPhone on Campus Quick Reference

Can I sync my iPhone with MeetingMaker?

Syncing the iPhone with MeetingMaker is currently unsupported.

How do I connect my iPhone to the wireless network?

Currently, the iPhone is not compatable with the "Northwestern" SSID. For now, iPhone users will need to connect to "nuwlan" through VPN. Follow these instructions to connect:

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select WiFi
  3. Select Other
  4. Type in nuwlan
  5. Select security = none
  6. Select the Join button

Once you are connected to SSID "nuwlan":

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select General
  3. Select Network
  4. Select VPN
  5. Select Settings
  6. Select L2TP
  7. Enter vpn-public.vpn.northwestern.edu for Server
  8. Enter your NetID in the Account field
  9. Enter your NetID password in the Password field
  10. Enter nuit in the Secret field
  11. Select Off for Proxy
  12. Select Save

Once you have "nuwlan" and VPN saved on your iPhone, you will be able to follow these instructions to connect:

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select VPN
  3. Select On

How do I set up my iPhone for e-mail?

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select Mail
  3. Select Add Account
  4. Select POP or IMAP

    Note: If you are not sure whether to select POP or IMAP, please see POP vs. IMAP for more information.

  5. Enter your name in the Name field
  6. Enter your e-mail address in the Address field
  7. Enter a Description to act as a nickname for this e-mail account
  8. Enter your incoming server (example, merle.it.northwestern.edu)

    Note: @u.northwestern.edu users should enter:
    Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.gmail.com
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

  9. Enter your NetID for your user name
  10. Enter your NetID password for password

    Note: You will need to update this information when you update your NetID password.

  11. Select Save
  12. Enter your outgoing mail server (example, merle.it.northwestern.edu)

    Note: If you enter your casbah, hecky, lulu, or merle server as the outgoing mail server, you will have to connect via VPN to send. You may also enter Cingular's smtp server cwmx.com to streamline the connection process.

  13. Leave the user name and password fields empty
  14. Select Save

    Note: Upon pushing the Save button, the iPhone will process the information and attempt to establish a connection. This may take a few minutes. You may receive a message that reads "Cannot connect using SSL. Do you want to try setting up the account with out SSL?" You may select Yes to attempt to establish a connection.
