NUIT Announces Support for Firefox
Posted Date: 02 Jun 2006
Effective Date: 02 Jun 2006
NUIT has added Firefox version 1.x and higher to its list of supported software. Firefox, also known as Mozilla Firefox, is an open source, cross-platform Web browser developed by the Mozilla Corporation. (Firefox should not be confused with the Mozilla Web browser.)
The decision to support Firefox as an industry-standard browser reflects increasing usage by the NU community and a growing number of vendors who are developing compatible software. In addition, several widely used University systems and services are compatible with Firefox:
Please note: Not all University systems are Firefox-compatible. In particular, Firefox is not recommended for use with either the Blackboard Course Management System or CAESAR.
Impact on End User |
Firefox offers a number of helpful features:
- Pop-up window blocking option
- Automatic spyware blocking
- Support for RSS
- Automatic security and feature updates
- Tabbed browsing (open multiple Web pages in the same window)
You can download the most recent version of Firefox for Windows or Macintosh at no charge from Mozilla's Web site. Before you do so, please consult your local technical support staff regarding your department's or school's policies about software installation.
For detailed information, including Firefox release notes and frequently asked questions, please visit the Mozilla site.
