What's New and Changing

Upgrade to Student Enterprise Systems Improves User Experience

Posted Date: 11 Sep 2007

Effective Date: 11 Sep 2007

Over the summer, CAESAR and SES were successfully upgraded to version 9.0. The upgrade was a collaborative effort involving many departments at the University, including: Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT), University Enrollment, Office of the Registrar, Student Financial Services, and the Schools and Colleges. This upgrade brings a new look and feel along with improved system navigation and user experience. The upgrade was necessary to stay current with technologies from the system vendor (PeopleSoft) as well as to enable processes that comply with government regulations.

These upgrades effect:

  • Students - Using CAESAR to register for classes, view account information, pay tuition, view transcripts, and upgrade contact information.
  • Faculty - Using CAESAR to enter student grades and view class rosters.
  • Advisors - Using CAESAR to view student information in order to provide advising services to students.
  • Staff - Using SES to access applicant and student related information; they will now be able to access the same information via CAESAR.

Impact on End User

Now that the upgrade to CAESAR/SES is complete, students, faculty, and staff will notice the new user-friendly interface. When students sign on to CAESAR, they will be greeted with the new Student Center, which provides key links from a central online location. CAESAR also features the new Faculty Center, an area that provides faculty with a single point of entry to view important information and begin system navigation.

In addition to the new look and navigation, this upgrade also enables:

  • Favorites - Users save favorites within CAESAR and access them from any computer.
  • Enrollment Functionality - Students select classes using a "Shopping Cart" as part of the enrollment process.
  • Improved Class Search Functionality - Students can narrow class searches to specific time periods.
  • Sort Feature - Staff can click on column headings to re-sort data when columns are present.
  • Export Feature - Staff can export data to an Excel spreadsheet on pages that display a grid icon.
