NUIT Begins Launch of New Identity Management System

Posted Date: 26 Oct 2009

Effective Date: 26 Oct 2009

As part of a continuing effort to provide a secure network, NUIT is implementing a phased launch of a new identity management system—the system that manages NetIDs and NetID passwords—during fall quarter 2009.

The new system, known as NU Validate, will replace SNAP, the internally-developed identity management system, and improve upon NetID management services, such as NetID creation. Powered by Sun Microsystems, NU Validate incorporates new industry-standard security measures and paves the way for future University developments.

Impact on End User

Users will be notified when their NetID has been migrated and will be prompted to access the new system to establish answers to security questions. Answering these questions will allow online self-resets of forgotten or expired NetID passwords. After December 31, 2009, the NUIT Support Center will no longer be able to reset forgotten or expired NetID passwords over the phone. More information is available at NetID Password Reset Guidelines.

Though users may notice an updated look to existing Web pages, NU Validate has much of the same information and services as the current SNAP system. Security enhancements to note include updated NetID password formation guidelines and the ability to self-reset forgotten or expired passwords online.
