Update: Several University Systems to Use Multi-factor Authentication Beginning July 11

Effective Date: 11 Jul 2016

Status Update

August 13, 2016:  Single Sign-On has been applied to FASIS Self Service with Multi-factor Authentication (MFA), to be consistent with NUPlans, NUFinancials, InfoED, CATracks and Cognos BI.

June 8, 2016: Northwestern Information Technology (IT) will add Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) to the log in process for NUFinancials, InfoEd, CATracks, and Cognos BI to enhance information security, beginning July 11, 2016.

In addition to logging in with a NetID and NetID password, users will now need to confirm their identity using a device they control such as their mobile or landline phone. FASIS Self Service, which introduced MFA in 2014, will now move to the improved registration and log in process. NUPlans enabled MFA this past April and MFA is planned for CAESAR Self-Service (Student Enterprise) in fall 2016.

Multi-factor Authentication, powered by Duo, provides an extra layer of protection by reducing the risk that sensitive information could be compromised should someone learn your NetID password. This security technology has fast become an industry standard for anywhere you access secure information online, such as your bank account, research, or medical records.

A general announcement was delivered to members of the University community affected by this change. Users of these systems will receive additional communications providing detailed information about the new log in process.

End User Impact

For faculty, staff, graduate students, work study students, and temporary employees.

Before July 11: You will need to register a phone (mobile, office, or home) to be used to confirm your identity as part of the login process for NUFinancials, InfoEd, CATracks, Cognos BI, FASIS Self Service, and NUPlans. If you currently have one or more phones registered with Multi-factor Authentication for FASIS Self Service, you do not need to re-register.

Saturday, July 9, 6:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.:  FASIS Self Service will be unavailable while NU Online Passport (Single Sign On) is applied.

Sunday, July 10, 9:00 a.m. – Noon: FASIS Self-Service, CATracks, Cognos BI, InfoEd and NUFinancials will be available, but may experience intermittent service disruptions as MFA is applied.

Beginning July 11: When using your NetID and NetID password to log into any University system using Multi-factor Authentication, you will be prompted to confirm your identity through your registered phone via phone call, text message, or push notification to the Duo App. Once confirmed, you will be able to access the system.

Depending on your school or departmental policies, you may choose the option to check a “remember me” box, which will bypass the need to use Multi-factor Authentication for subsequent logins for a period of 30 days. However, you will still need to use your NetID and NetID password for each login.
