Installing RealPlayer for Windows

NUIT recommends using the most recent version of RealPlayer to view University webcasts. Make sure you have uninstalled previous versions of RealPlayer before installing the application.

Some installation steps may vary based on your personal preferences for multimedia software. Please follow each step carefully.

  1. Download the RealPlayer installer software to your computer. This link will open in a new window. [NOTE: Depending on your Web browser software, you may be asked to run the RealPlayer installer directly from RealNetworks' Web site. If prompted, click Run.]
  2. If you did not run the RealPlayer installer directly from Real Software's Web site, and instead saved the installer to your local computer, double-click on the RealPlayer installer application to begin the installation process. A window similar to the following will appear:

  3. A window similar to the following will appear:

  4. Review the terms of the RealPlayer End User License Agreement and click Accept. A window similar to the following may appear:
    [NOTE: If this window does not appear, proceed to the next step.] Choose connection speed

  5. Select your appropriate connection speed. If you are on-campus, select Office LAN 10 Mbps or above.
  6. Click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  7. Uncheck Add a desktop shortcut for Free Games & Music from Real and Add a desktop shortcut to RealRhapsody. You may leave these options checked if you would like to use these features. This will not affect the ability to view Northwestern Webcasts.
  8. Click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:

  10. You are presented with a list of multimedia formats that RealPlayer is capable of playing. This step will vary based on your personal preferences.
    • If you would like to use RealPlayer by default for all multimedia formats, check all of these options.
    • If you would like to use RealPlayer by default only for Northwestern Webcasts (and use other software such as Windows Media Player or iTunes for other multimedia formats), uncheck all of these options.
    This will not affect the ability to view Northwestern Webcasts.
  11. Click Finish. A window similar to the following will appear:

  12. RealNetworks requires all users to register RealPlayer before installation is complete. This involves "signing in" with an e-mail address and password. RealPlayer will prompt you to sign in. If you have previously registered an e-mail account with RealNetworks, you may use it. Otherwise, click the Click Here link to register.
  13. Once you have entered an e-mail address and password, click Sign In. A window similar to the following will appear:

  14. Type in your e-mail address and password, as in the previous screen. Type in your ZIP code. You may wish to uncheck the boxes below these fields to avoid receiving marketing from RealNetworks and other companies.
  15. Click Create. A window similar to the following will appear:

  16. Select Basic Setup and click Continue.
  17. You may test RealPlayer to see if installation was successful. If you can view this video clip, your software is configured properly to view Northwestern Webcasts.
