Webcasting Services

Northwestern University's Webcast service today is based on Adobe Flash Media Server and RealNetwork's Real Server. In order to view a Webcast, a user must have, at minimum, the Flash Player plug-in or RealPlayer Basic installed on their computer. The Flash player plug-in and RealPlayer Clients for Windows, Apple, and Unix are available.

Network Requirements

Webcasting at Northwestern requires at least a 100Mbps switched Ethernet connection to the NU network. If you are unsure of the network service at your location, contact NUIT at 847-491-4532 or email Webcast.

Production

NUIT's Webcast service offers a variety of production options, depending upon an event's size, audience, and location. Production can range from a single fixed camera to a fully produced multi-camera event. Post-production can also be arranged.

Stored Content

The University will archive Webcasts for its historical record, with streamed Webcasts retained for at least one year on a streaming server, and master tapes stored in the University Library's Multimedia Center. Northwestern will not store, archive, or make available on-demand any program content covered by property rights that specifically prohibit such activities.

Important: When planning an event, organizers must consider whether performance rights exist on any material they want to use. They must also secure Performance Rights Releases from event participants. Other materials such as pictures, music, or written material may be covered by specific copyright that could preclude its use on a Webcast.

It is organizers' responsibility to acquire all releases and licenses necessary for the use of materials and personal appearances. If you need assistance, contact University Relations at 847-491-1547.
