Project Charter

Background

Northwestern’s existing lecture capture solution, Mediasite, will be replaced and shutdown on August 31, 2018, and replaced with a new, cloud-based video capture and management service, powered by Panopto. The transition to Panopto is designed to improve lecture capture and video management services across the campus community and provide better integrations with Canvas, the University’s Learning Management System.

The migration of Mediasite content will begin in January 2018 and continue over a phased approach through July 2018.  Mediasite will be decommissioned on August 31, 2018.

Goals and Objectives

Phase I – Full Data Migration to Panopto Video Capture and Management Service

Northwestern IT will migrate data for all current users of Mediasite lecture capture systems, including Feinberg, Kellogg, McCormick, Medill, and the School of Communications. The migration will require four to five months to complete.

Phase II – Mediasite Decommissioning

On August 31, 2018, Mediasite services will be turned off and unavailable. Unless a school/user has made special arrangements with Northwestern IT to continue their use of Mediasite, the system will no longer provide access to files or play media of any type. All data will have been archived and the system’s server resources will be repurposed for other projects and activities.
