Voicemail Replacement Project

Project Status

July 10, 2018: The Cisco Unity voicemail service has been successfully implemented and all Northwestern voice mailboxes have been migrated to the new service. This project is complete.

Project Background

Beginning in summer FY2018, Northwestern IT will begin migrating to cloud-based Office 365 services, including email. The current voicemail technology is not supported by Microsoft on cloud-based Office 365. Therefore, prior to the Office 365 migration, it will be necessary to transition the University’s voicemail service to the Cisco Unity service which is part of Northwestern’s new voice communications platform. This migration is planned to occur on July 10, 2018.

Goals and Objectives

This project is part of Northwestern IT's continued commitment to maintain Northwestern's communication infrastructure to ensure the consistent and efficient delivery of converged communications.

The overall project goal is to transition all end users’ voicemail service to one that offers equivalent functionality and is better integrated with our new Cisco-based converged communications platform.

Approach

This project will be accomplished in phases.

Phase 1: Pilot – June 11-22, 2018

Northwestern IT will identify IT staff and other key stakeholders to pilot the new service beginning, June 11 and continuing over a two-week period. This review period will be used to finalize documentation, update processes, and capture use cases based on pilot feedback.

Phase 2: Voicemail Auto Attendant Migration – June 18 - 30, 2018

A Voicemail Auto Attendant is a feature used by some schools and departments to direct calls and leave messages according to a certain set of call handing rules. These rules will be imported into the Cisco Unity system by June 30.  Northwestern IT personnel will work with users to ensure that their auto attendant rules are functioning properly prior to the general migration.

Phase 3: Migrate all voice mailbox accounts – July 10, 2018

All voice mailbox accounts will be migrated on the same day. No service interruption will occur as a result of the migration.
