Research Computing Student Intern

  • Department: Northwestern IT Research Computing Services

Northwestern IT Research Computing Services is looking for an undergraduate or a graduate student to support computational and data-enabled research at Northwestern. You will be collecting and analyzing high-performance computing utilization metrics data, developing training materials for new computational researchers, developing reports, and helping researchers with their computational work. We are a team of computational and data-enabled research specialists with diverse backgrounds and skills. We work together with Northwestern researchers and IT partners to help Northwestern faculty and students perform computational and data-enabled research across a wide breadth of research areas. You will be working closely with us to help support researchers across Northwestern.

Qualifications

The candidates are expected to have strong written and verbal communication. Depending on your skills and interests, the position can involve one or more of the items listed below

  • Linux environment and software installations
  • A scripting language such as Bash, Python, Java, Lua, Julia, Perl, or Ruby
  • A statistical analysis program such as R, Stata, SAS, or MATLAB
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Parallel computing, MPI, or OpenMP
  • GPU computing or CUDA programming

Student Customer Support Consultant

If you help your family and friends with their computer and Internet issues, then this job is for you! Customer support consultants in the Technology Support Center provide first level support for University-wide services such as NetID, email, MFA, and network connectivity (e.g., wireless and VPN). Prior knowledge of these services isn’t required – we’ll train you on everything you need to know. This is an opportunity for you to develop your soft skills and gain a broad knowledge of technology that can be transferred to any future career choice.

You will be reviewed twice during the academic year, and are eligible to receive between $0.10 and $0.50 at each review, for a maximum yearly raise of $1.00. You will also have multiple advancement opportunities towards roles with heightened responsibility and offering increased pay. There are also opportunities for summer employment.

Summary Responsibilities
Technology Support Center
  1. Provide proactive and efficient customer service so that Northwestern students, faculty, and staff not only receive the help they need, but are better equipped to solve their problems in the future.
  2. Triage and troubleshoot questions about Northwestern’s computing environment and web-based services. Handle issues that are received through various communications methods (e.g., phone call, email, walk-in). Provide technical support at the Technology Support Centers in 1800 Sherman and the University Library.
  3. Attend weekly training sessions where you will learn techniques to improve your communication and people skills, gain technical knowledge for troubleshooting, and receive information on organizational policies and procedures.
Qualifications

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  1. Good written and verbal communication skills
  2. Excellent analytical skills
  3. Ability to work at least 7 hours a week; your weekly work schedule will accommodate your class schedule

  1. Freshman or sophomore status
  2. Previous experience in a customer support role, whether paid or volunteer

Student Video Specialist

As key members of the Media and Design team, Student Video Specialists work on video, audio, animation, and graphics projects for clients across Northwestern. As a part of our team, you will develop and learn new skills in media creation. Students of all years are welcome to apply! You should have interest and skill in at least one of the following areas: video production, video post-production, animation, graphic design, lighting, cinematography, and photography.

Summary Responsibilities
Media & Design Production
  1. Post-production for media including, but not limited to, live events, promotional videos, and Massive Open Online Courses.
  2. Serve as a production assistant, camera operator, or other duties in the studio or on-location.

Qualifications

  2. Experience with video production environment

Audio/Visual Student Technician

In this role, you will guide clients in the operation of presentation and conferencing systems in supported spaces, collaborate to solve complex problems, and engage in service improvement initiatives to enhance customer experience.

This is an opportunity to work on a highly diverse team to assist a wide range of professors and departments across the university. You will develop a broad range of technical skills, soft skills and potentially leadership skills applicable to any future career choice.

Summary Responsibilities
  1. Provide technical support for Northwestern students, faculty, and staff in NUIT supported technology spaces across Evanston and Chicago campuses. Manage and resolve critical customer incidents, requests, and escalation.
  2. Deliver proactive and efficient customer service, such that users receive the help they need, and are better equipped to independently solve problems.
  3. Attend weekly training sessions to gain required knowledge for technical troubleshooting, receive information on organizational policies and procedures, and to improve customer service skills.
  4. Provide routine quality checks and maintenance of A/V equipment.
  5. Leadership opportunities available.

Qualifications

  1. First or second year student with a desire to work in a customer focused work environment.
  2. Some experience in a customer support role.
  3. Some experience with any A/V presentation technology.
  4. Proven knowledge of computing technologies (e.g., Windows, macOS, iOS, Android).

*Consultant base wage is $12.00 per hour. Consultants are reviewed twice during the academic year with opportunities for raises. Strategic Communication Student Specialist

The Northwestern IT Communications team is seeking a self-motivated, high-energy student with a passion for marketing, strategic communication, and digital storytelling. The student will directly support the communications team as they develop and implement a comprehensive, campus-wide communication and marketing strategy that raises awareness for Northwestern IT’s services, initiatives, and priorities, all in support of the University’s ambitious mission and strategic priorities.

Summary Responsibilities
  1. Assist with the management of Northwestern IT’s social media accounts with a focus on Facebook, Twitter, and eventually Instagram; work will include editorial calendar management; content ideation, creation, and execution; and analyzing and reporting metrics.
  2. Draft editorial content for a variety of communication vehicles, including the Northwestern IT website and bi-monthly e-newsletter, as well as the Digital Learning website.
  3. Provide pre-, on-site, and post-event support, as needed, for Northwestern IT departments (Research Computing Services, Teaching and Learning Technologies, etc.) offering consultations, workshops, and other events.
  4. Comply with Northwestern University and Information Technology policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of ethics and integrity.
  5. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. Ability to work 12–15 hours per week
  2. Background in strategic communication, public relations, marketing, journalism, social media, or relevant field is preferred
  3. Possess superb communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and analytical skills
  4. Superior writing and editing skills
  5. Solid understanding of social media marketing; experience with Sprinklr a plus
  6. Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  7. Demonstrate organizational and planning skills
  8. Experience in web design, podcast creation, and video recording is a plus
