Tom Murphy

Senior Director, Information Security, CISO, Information Security


Tom Murphy joined Northwestern in February, 2017 as Chief Information Security Officer. He is accountable for the campus-wide information security environment, including: adoption of standards-based programs; development of policy, standards, and guidelines; assessment of information technology controls; and leadership of related activities. Prior to this, Tom held progressively increasing roles in information security and networking positions in higher education, health care and the corporate sector. Tom is a Certified Information System Security Professional with a Master of Science degree in National Security/Information Protection, and a Juris Doctorate from Western New England University School of Law.

Nowell Arnold

Associate Director, Information Security; Deputy CISO, Information Security


Nowell Arnold joined Northwestern in June, 2018 as Deputy Chief Information Security Officer. He works closely with business and technology leaders across the University to assess and manage information security risks; provides key support in identifying and managing the complete lifecycle of the University’s security technology; and oversees staff and daily operations of the Information Security Office of Northwestern IT. Prior to this, Nowell held progressively increasing roles in information security and networking positions in the financial services sector. Nowell is a Certified Information System Security Professional with a degree in Analytical Chemistry.

Tim LeKan

Data Security Analyst, Information Security


Long time Chicagoan Tim has been with Northwestern University since 1998, working in medical Information systems at The Feinberg School of Medicine Department of OB/GYN, where he developed, maintained, directed local and enterprise systems for both clinical and medical research initiatives. Top priorities for Tim in this role were security and regulatory compliance and was a sitting member of the HIPAA committee for the then Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation & Security Officer for the Department of OBGYN. Tim moved to a permanent security role with Northwestern University in the central Information Security office in 2010 where he currently works on numerous security projects and tasks one of which is the Vulnerability Assessment Program. Tim has a Fine Arts Background studying at Columbia College Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Art.

Roger Safian

Lead Data Security Analyst, Information Security


Roger Safian has worked for Northwestern University, where he earned his BS, for over 35 years. The last 30 have been in information security, and he is currently a lead data security analyst. He helps oversee a diverse network of 20,000 hosts and more than 35,000 users.  Roger has been involved in a variety of computer security related groups, including FIRST and the Big Ten Computer Security Working Group.
