Posted Date: 18 Dec 2015

Effective Date: 3 Dec 2015

BrianNorthwestern Information Technology (IT) senior distributed support specialist Brian Suarez (pictured second from left) was selected in December as Chicagoland HDI’s 2015 Desktop Support Technician of the Year. HDI is the leading national association for IT support professionals.

This award comes as no surprise to anyone familiar with Brian’s outstanding technical support for customers from the President and Provost’s offices to his colleagues in Northwestern IT.

Northwestern President Morton Schapiro can personally attest to Brian’s skills: “It’s a joy to work with Brian. He can solve any computer problem – and always with a smile.” Brian’s expertise isn’t limited to ensuring customers’ computers are up to date, secure, and running smoothly. “I troubleshoot smartphones, tablets, laptops,” notes Brian, “basically anything that connects to the Internet.”

“Brian’s work has been exceptional in his four years here, so this award is well-deserved,” says Bob Davis, associate director, Technology Support Services. “I receive great feedback from nearly everyone he works with, including some of our most high-profile customers.”

This feedback, along with contributions to major projects like the rollout of Windows 7 to nearly 100 of his customers across Northwestern, also supported Brian’s recent promotion to senior distributed support specialist.

Northwestern IT Technology Support Services senior user support specialist Lynne Jeffers nominated Brian for the award and gave a perfect example of his customer-focused attitude and quick problem-solving skills: “At the banquet to honor all of the Chicagoland HDI award nominees, the guest speaker had trouble with the slides on his computer during his talk. In a room full of more than 60 support professionals, Brian was the only one to step up and fix the issue on the fly. We joked that he should have won based solely on that!”

The nomination from Lynne made the award particularly meaningful for Brian. “Lynne was a mentor to me when I started in this role,” Brian remarked. “When I got the chance to speak to the group after I won, she was the first person I thanked because she’s always been really supportive and helpful.”

CarrieLynne also nominated Carrie Willis (’15, pictured center), user support specialist, for Chicagoland HDI’s Analyst of the Year, which recognizes an outstanding first-level support analyst. Carrie worked in the IT Support Center throughout her time as a Northwestern student and was hired as a full-time staff member in September.

Brian, along with other local chapter winners, is now eligible for the HDI Midwest Technician of the Year award. The winner of this award will be announced in early 2016.
