Multi-factor Authentication on Self-Service CAESAR – October 15

Posted Date: 13 Oct 2016

Effective Date: 15 Oct 2016

Northwestern Information Technology (IT) will enable Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) on Self-Service CAESAR to enhance information security, beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016. CAESAR joins other University systems, including NUFinancials, FASIS Self-Service, NUPlans, InfoEd, CATracks, and Cognos BI which have added MFA to the login process.

Students, faculty, and advisors have received an email announcement regarding the new login change with information on how to get started and registration tips available through the IT Knowledge Base. Additionally, Open Labs are offered by Northwestern IT on both campuses for in-person MFA registration and general use assistance.

Multi-factor Authentication, powered by Duo, provides an extra layer of protection by reducing the risk that sensitive information could be compromised should someone learn your NetID password. This security technology is an industry standard for anywhere secure online information is accessed, such as your bank account, research, or medical records.

End User Impact

No action is required for students, faculty, and staff who have previously registered one or more phones with Multi-factor Authentication for use with other University systems. If you have not yet registered for MFA, register your phone (mobile, office, or home) to be used to confirm your identity as part of the login process. Register your phone.

Beginning at 11:00 a.m. on October 15: When using your NetID and NetID password to log in to Self-Service CAESAR, you will be prompted to confirm your identity through your registered phone via phone call, text message, or push notification to the Duo App. Once confirmed, you will be able to access CAESAR and any other system using Multi-factor Authentication.

You have the option to check a “remember me” box, which will bypass the need to use Multi-factor Authentication for subsequent logins for a period of 30 days. However, you will still need to use your NetID and NetID password for each login.
