How to Connect to the SSCC

Install SSH Secure Shell on your PC

Download the Windows SSH 3 Client Binary from http://charlotte.at.northwestern.edu/bef/sshdist.html

Run the SSH installer (SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe). Two SSH Shortcuts will be placed on your desktop. One shortcut opens a new terminal window (it looks like a computer monitor), the other opens a new file transfer window (it looks like a folder) when you double click it.

Configure SSH Secure Shell

Double-click on SSH Secure Shell icon to start a new terminal window.

Click on [Profiles] and then on [Add Profile]

Enter Profile Name. For example "hardin" and click [Add to Profiles]

Note that "hardin" replaced "hardin2" in October 2006. If you find SSCC documentation still using "hardin2" please substitute "hardin" instead.

Click on [Profiles] and then on [Edit Profiles]

Enter "hardin.it.northwestern.edu" in the field named "Host name"

Enter your NU NetID in the field named "User name"

Click on "Authentication"

Mark "Public Key" as shown in the figure above and delete it by clicking on the red cross above the list. If you have successfully done that, only "Keyboard Interactive" and "Password" are remaining in the list, like shown in the figure below.

Click [OK] to close the Profile Editing Window

(Note: There is no need to change other fields. If you experience difficulties with the connection, refer to the section SSH Profile Settings below.)

Make sure you are connected to the internet.

Click on [Profiles] and then select the profile you just created (here: [hardin]).

You will be asked for your password. Type in your NU NetID password.

The status of the connection is shown at the bottom of the SSH terminal window. If it says "connected to hardin.it.northwestern.edu" then you are connected!

To logout, type "logout" and hit <Enter> or you can disconnect over the SSH by clicking [File] and clicking [Disconnect].

Off-Campus Connections Must First Use VPN

If you are connecting to the SSCC from off campus, you must first establish a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to the campus network before you open a connection with SSH. Establishing a VPN connection authenticates you to the NU network, and adds a level of trust and security to your connection.

See Set Up VPN for Windows for detailed instructions explaining how to configure and use the VPN Client software.

Windows Vista users should modify Configuration Step #4: The type of VPN should be set to PPTP instead of automatic.
