Length and Word Limit of Nickname in the Online Directory
Posted Date: 15 Jan 2004
Effective Date: 15 Jan 2004
As a part of the continuing planned migration of Northwestern's online directory to standard technology using LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol), NUIT will limit the length of the nickname field in the online directory to 100 characters and/or 10 words that are separated by a space, comma, semicolon, or line breaks. If you are currently using the LDAP directory, the nickname field has already been truncated to the designated limit.
These changes are being made to ensure fast directory searches as excessively long nickname fields have a detrimental effect on server performance. NUIT believes that a reasonable number of variants of your name will fit within this limit.
Impact on End User |
Northwestern staff, faculty, and students who utilize the nickname field in the online directory should be aware of this announcement.
Any change made to the nickname field will be subject to a new size and word limit. The nickname is not case sensitive and the new limit will not count duplications that differ only in case.
