Mac OS X 10.0, 10.1 Support Ends

Posted Date: 26 Jan 2004

Effective Date: 11 Jan 2005

The Macintosh OS X 10.0 and 10.1 operating systems will reach the end of their supported lifecycles at Northwestern on January 11, 2005. NUIT's operating system support schedule is influenced by the availability of key features, security, vendor life-cycles, and/or necessary compatibility with important applications.

Support for Mac OS X 10.0 and 10.1 is primarily ending because these operating systems do not support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption technology using Northwestern's primary e-mail client, Eudora. NUIT will require all users to switch to SSL for e-mail encryption by January 2005. More information about this switch is available online. Users are encouraged to upgrade to the Mac OS 10.3 operating system.

Impact on End User

Workstations that continue to use Mac OS X 10.0 or 10.1 after the implementation date will not receive support from NUIT. Further, new software implemented within the University will not be tested for serviceability under OS X 10.0 or 10.1. This may lead to lost functions or productivity. Due to the switch to SSL encryption, Eudora e-mail clients on Mac OS X 10.0 and 10.1 operating systems will no longer work at Northwestern.

Upgrade to Mac OS 10.3 before January 11, 2005. Detailed information on OS 10.3 is available from Apple's support Web site.
