Ph Online Directory Service Shut Down

Northwestern's online "Ph" directory service has been superseded by LDAP-based directory services for improved security and future University enhancements.

Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) is converting the online "Ph" directory to LDAP in order to provide greater unification of security practices and streamline the processes for implementing new software. As of January 31, the search function for e-mail clients and applications still set to query the current "Ph" directory will no longer work.

Note for E-mail Users: In Northwestern's continuous effort to ensure that only authorized individuals are accessing University data, the information that you may currently retrieve from a "Ph" look-up through your e-mail client (e.g., Eudora or Outlook) may not be present in the new LDAP look-up. If there is information that you normally searched for using "Ph" that is no longer available under the LDAP online directory, users are asked to use the Northwestern Online Directory search for complete information.

Off-Campus Users: To protect peoples' identities, off-campus users will see less directory information unless they connect to the NU Network using Virtual Private Network (VPN) or by clicking on the authenticate button next to the online directory search field.

Northwestern Webmail users are not affected.

Visit step-by-step instructions on configuring Eudora, Outlook, Apple Mail, or Entourage software to access the new LDAP online directory.

School or department level applications that are currently set up to query "Ph" for data will not be able to perform this function after January 31. To request application access to the new LDAP directory, please fill out the LDAP request form.
